Chapter 1278 - 1277: Richard Shaw Risked His Life for Her
Leah got up to wash and waited for about half an hour before coming downstairs. Casimir Shaw had been taken out by Aunt Zhao, and Richard Shaw was also gone. The entire Shaw Mansion was quiet, eerily so.
The fire in the fireplace burned intensely.
The old lady sat alone in front of the fireplace, wearing reading glasses, as usual, knitting thick wool socks. Seeing Leah come downstairs, she smiled and said, "Leah, come and try these socks to see if they fit. Richard said you love walking barefoot. When you’re young, you don’t pay attention, and the cold enters the body. When you get older, you will suffer."
Leah walked over, looking at the old lady’s sewing basket, where many pairs of coarse knit socks had already been completed. They were all extremely soft and colorful, looking very warm. Leah had never understood why the old lady knitted so many socks, why she did so much needlework. Now, seeing her calmly watching her only grandson being taken away for investigation, Leah suddenly understood. The old lady was clearly worried that after passing away, no one would knit these for her, for Richard Shaw, or for Thomas Shaw.
Leah’s eyes were slightly moist. She sat on the sofa and hugged the old lady, hoarsely saying, "Grandma, he’ll be fine. With so many military merits, nobody can touch the Shaw Family."
The old lady lovingly touched her head, sighed deeply, and said, "Sometimes, the merits pile up like a mountain, but if a mistake is made, those merits can crush a person like a mountain."
The thing the grandson had to do was to overturn the Cox Family’s case. No amount of military merit could offset that. Back then, a mistake was made, and now it’s time to correct it.
"There’s millet porridge stewing in the kitchen. You haven’t eaten yet, have you? Come on, let’s eat, just the two of us," the old lady said, placing the sewing basket aside with a smile.
The old lady knew this was just the beginning; a long and difficult time lay ahead.
After breakfast, Leah went out and called Lana Shaw and Calliope Shaw. With such matters at hand, aside from the Shaw Family, whose honor and disgrace are intertwined, she trusted no one else.
Griffith Squire over there wished for the downfall of the Shaw Family; he wouldn’t offer any support. She could only wait for Ignatius Leclair to return from the United Kingdom and rely on Lana Shaw and Calliope Shaw’s connections in the Imperial City to gather some information.
Lana Shaw and Calliope Shaw gave Leah the name of a private club. When Leah arrived, she found not only Lana Shaw and Calliope Shaw, but Drake Howard was also there.
"Leah, we’ve heard about cousin’s situation; we were about to call you, but you called us first," Lana Shaw approached, holding Leah’s hand and comforting her, "Don’t worry, cousin will be fine."
Leah looked towards Drake Howard.
"Old Shaw anticipated this day long ago. He called me this morning, saying that during his absence, I should look after you." Drake Howard’s expression showed a hint of gravity as he asked, "Was Old Shaw taken away by the investigation team?"
"It happened this morning. The cause was Pearl Landon’s formal report accusing Richard Shaw of marrying the daughter of a corrupt official, related to the Cox Family embezzlement case twenty years ago," Leah said, her face slightly pale.
Lana Shaw and Calliope Shaw were shocked, and Drake Howard’s expression also changed. Although they knew the Shaw Family faced a major disaster, they didn’t know the specifics. Now, seeing Richard Shaw taken away for investigation, they realized the situation was more serious than they imagined.
Lana Shaw and Calliope Shaw were young and didn’t know about the Cox Family’s case. Drake Howard, however, was older than Richard Shaw and had been old enough to remember when it happened. Hearing about the Cox Family’s matter, his expression changed.
"Don’t panic yet. Let me make some inquiries," Drake Howard quickly called the old lady and then contacted some people to inquire about Pearl Landon’s situation, taking half an hour. After hanging up, he looked at Leah.
"It really was Pearl Landon’s formal report. Also, Old Shaw was taken away so swiftly, this matter can’t be separated from the Winton Family. Alessandro Winton has been in his current position for years without advancing further, he needs a token of allegiance, and the Shaw Family is his best option," Drake Howard cursed lowly, recalling how Alessandro Winton hosted a feigned apology banquet last night, likely to show the entire circle. Such a vile person.
Leah thought of the Winton Family, recalling how she met Pearl Landon at their banquet yesterday. Pearl recognized her, indicating the Winton Family not only targeted the Shaw Family but might even involve her and Griffith Squire.
After all, the two siblings were still seen as offspring of a corrupt official.
"It’s not that simple. The old lady warned each branch of the family months ago, saying the Shaw Family would face a frost period and asked if anyone wished to leave the genealogy," Calliope Shaw said softly, "The Winton Family matter is just the beginning. Cousin might be planning something bigger."
"I just called the old lady. She said she’s aware of the situation but advised not to intervene, as the Shaw Family has its own plans," Drake Howard nodded and said, "The old lady’s years of friendship with the Shaw Family, she won’t stand by. It seems there’s only one possibility."
Drake Howard finished, then quietly looked at Leah.
Over the years, the affection between Richard Shaw and Leah Squire had been evident to them all — perhaps to the extent he’d sacrifice his life for Leah Squire. Now the revelation of Leah Squire being a descendant of the Cox Family made Drake Howard suddenly realize why they loved each other yet never came together.
Richard Shaw truly risked everything—including his life—for Leah Squire. Only such a major case puts the Shaw Family on thin ice, while the Howard Family temporarily holds back.
Leah felt a chill in her heart, thinking of that idea and finding it unbelievable. How could it be possible? Their sibling pair always wanted to clear their father’s name. Was Richard Shaw planning to help them with this?
Was he crazy? Would he stake the entire Shaw Family on it?
Leah’s face turned pale, fingers clenched tightly. Reason told her it was impossible, yet a voice inside whispered that Richard Shaw was precisely that kind of restrained madman; no force could sway him from what he wanted to do.
"Let’s calmly wait for a couple of days. With something this significant, it’s impossible Old Shaw has no arrangements. We must understand the situation clearly before planning the next step," Drake Howard said, as no one yet knew the actual details, except trusting Richard Shaw.
Leaving the club, Lana Shaw and Calliope Shaw worried Leah might drive unsafely, so they drove her home. Leah sat in the car, watching the bleak autumn wind outside, realizing the weather grew colder day by day, especially in the north, with a bone-chilling cold.
She suddenly remembered her visit to the Imperial City this time was orchestrated by Richard Shaw. She wished to return to the South Seas, but he persuaded her to stay a few more days. Did he foresee this day long ago, lacking confidence himself, hence craving to see her, to enjoy the fleeting sweet moments?
