Chapter 586: 586: The Horror of the Curse, On the Verge of Death
"Ah!!!"
The piercing scream made Malfoy jolt violently.
"What the!!"
He flipped up from the sofa where he had been lying, pulled out his wand, and immediately entered a guarded stance.
Ever since Daphne had beaten him half to death with a full combo last time, he never forgot to bring his wand with him, even when going into the bathroom.
Just as Malfoy was still trying to figure out who had screamed, he saw Daphne clutching the envelope, her eyes fixed firmly on the words written on it.
"Come to the Constellation Society. Come alone."
Her heartbeat accelerated violently, thumping so hard it felt like it was about to leap out of her chest.
Pansy shrank fearfully into the corner. From Daphne's face, she could see a kind of romantic fervor even more fanatical than her own.
Inside the room, Basil the owl turned its head away while Pansy's owl let out terrified hoots.
Pansy's owl: Let me out! I don't want to stay here!
Daphne suddenly appeared in front of Pansy and dragged her toward the wardrobe.
She yanked open the wardrobe doors and threw out the school robes, revealing all kinds of dresses and clothes inside.
"Quick, help me pick what to wear!"
Pansy was shaken so hard by the strength Daphne had developed from years of hanging around the kitchen that she nearly fainted. Dizzily, she pointed at one outfit.
Daphne tossed Pansy aside and began changing clothes.
By the time Pansy regained her senses, Daphne had already changed into the same black dress she wore at the banquet last time.
Seeing Daphne about to leave, Pansy caught sight of the note that had fallen to the floor and hurriedly lunged forward, wrapping herself around Daphne's leg.
"Think it through, Daphne!"
"What?"
Daphne, whose mind had been completely swept away, asked blankly.
Pansy struggled to climb back up, wiped away the tears that had come from smashing her nose, and said with heartfelt anguish, "Use your brain and think carefully. That's John. Why would he be looking for you?"
Who was John Wick?
He was the perfect dream guy in the eyes of Hogwarts girls. The problem was that this perfect dream guy was famously dense.
John writing a letter to ask Daphne out on a date?
Pansy would burst out laughing at the idea. "Impossible. Absolutely impossible!"
Seeing Daphne gradually calm down, Pansy wiped the sweat from her forehead.
If Daphne had really gone out like that just now, the entire school would know exactly what she was going to do. How would she face people afterward?
Since they already knew there would be no result, she absolutely had to preserve her best friend's dignity.
After Pansy's reminder, Daphne's overheated mind finally began to cool down.
Yeah... that was John.
Disappointment filled Daphne's heart.
By the time Daphne left the dormitory, she had changed back into her school robes.
Even so, despite her nervousness, she still held a trace of expectation.
She hurried past the common room without even glancing at Malfoy's guarded posture.
Malfoy felt baffled. He had thought the secret date between him and Astoria after class today had been exposed.
What he didn't know was that Blaise, who had witnessed the entire emotional rollercoaster from anticipation, to ecstasy, to disappointment, wore a deeply disappointed expression.
"I clearly told Daphne in secret. Why didn't she teach Draco a lesson?"
Ever since the double-crossing Blaise had been humiliated by Malfoy, he had wanted revenge.
Especially after the last time when he and Malfoy ended up taking each other down together. The more he thought about it afterward, the angrier he became.
What he didn't know was that the Slytherin Quidditch players shared the same thoughts.
A whole group of them had been eagerly waiting for Malfoy to get beaten up. Some had even taken out snacks to place bets.
In the end, nothing happened.
Goyle smashed the Chocolate Frog in his hand and shouted, "Why didn't they fight?"
"You really wanted them to fight that badly?"
A voice suddenly cut in.
Without even thinking, Goyle replied, "It'd be best if Draco ended up in the Hospital Wing for two days too."
After speaking, Goyle suddenly realized that voice didn't sound like Crabbe's.
Turning his head, he immediately forced a flattering smile onto his face.
"Draco..."
Malfoy pulled out his wand and pointed at Goyle in delight.
"Hey, I recognize you."
He walked over and sat beside Goyle with a smile on his face. "Ah, I remember now. Behind that tree beside the Black Lake, I saw you there before."
Throwing an arm around Goyle's shoulders, he drove a punch straight into Goyle's stomach.
"Take a deep breath. It's normal for it to hurt a little."
What followed was Goyle's miserable howling.
To Malfoy, the situation was simple. I treat you like my lackey, and you stab me in the back?
Unforgivable!
...
It was strange.
Normally, all she had to do to reach the Constellation Society was think about it.
Yet Daphne walked from the first floor to the 3rd floor, then from the 3rd floor back down again.
In the end, she stopped in front of the old site of the Constellation Society and took a deep breath.
The doors of the Constellation Society slowly appeared. She comforted herself, "It's fine, Daphne. It's just an ordinary meeting."
The disappointment in her heart gradually settled.
To Daphne, as long as she could stay by John's side, sooner or later there would be a chance.
After calming herself down, Daphne opened the doors to the Constellation Society.
What greeted her was a doorway spilling thick smoke outward.
Beyond the doorway was another room.
Daphne walked through it.
Inside the Dragon Valley, countless dragons soared through the sky. Around John, numerous sheets of parchment floated in midair.
Two books, one black and one silver-white, hovered separately at his left and right sides.
A black dragon descended from the sky and seemed to be saying something to John.
"Thank you, Amohan. This is enough."
Patting Amohan's massive head, John sent her back.
Amohan happily swayed her tail, nodded, and flew back to her cave.
"John?" Daphne walked into Dragon Valley and looked around uncertainly. "What's going on?"
"I suddenly realized I was missing some materials, so I asked Amohan to help me collect them."
John's wand stirred the cauldron as he smiled and said, "You probably won't be able to attend classes this afternoon."
"For this period of time, you'll have to stay with me."
Those words, so easy to misinterpret, made Daphne unconsciously lower her voice as she softly responded with an "Mm."
She walked over to look at the various experiment reports floating in the air. They all looked very old.
"The curse on your body is different from Astoria's." John waved his hand, and one report flew before him.
Ravenclaw's book flipped through its pages rapidly.
"You're currently in a dormant stage. I'll need to use certain methods to activate it before treatment can begin."
Ravenclaw's book floated in front of Daphne. Looking at the possible outcomes written inside, she read:
"Death or recovery."
Daphne stared blankly at the words before saying without hesitation, "I trust you, John."
"Sometimes we still have to face reality, Daphne." John shook his head. "To be honest, the difficulty of treating the Bloodborne Curse is obvious to everyone. You can't blindly trust me. I need you to make your own judgment."
"I trust you. That is my judgment." Daphne met John's gaze and said firmly, "I trust my king."
In the end, she still could not say those words.
She was afraid. Afraid that if she said them, her relationship with John would change.
She was also afraid that those words would put John in an awkward position.
If she unfortunately died, then she wanted to die as John Wick's friend, not as the girl who would leave him with lifelong regret.
The proud Greengrass loved so humbly that even Daphne herself could not tell whether she should be this way.
Yet she was willing to trust John unconditionally and calmly face the curse that might cost her life.
"Daphne..."
John looked at her resolute face and slowly nodded.
"I swear on my life that nothing will happen to you."
After saying that, John flipped through the materials and found the method to activate the curse.
Floating over to Daphne, John poured the finished potion out from the cauldron.
"Drink this, then touch this book."
John walked over to Daphne and handed her the potion.
Daphne took a deep breath. The nervousness in her heart left her with no time to even taste the potion before swallowing it down.
After drinking it, she felt no change.
Then she looked at the book and slowly reached out her left hand to touch it.
She could sense the evil radiating from the book, but she was willing to trust John.
She trusted John, this king who always kept his word.
Not even death itself could stop John from fulfilling a promise.
Her palm touched the book.
Yet Daphne felt no discomfort at all. She looked toward John, her lips parting slightly as if she wanted to ask something.
But in the next second, darkness filled her vision.
After the world spun around her, her body collapsed.
She fell onto a patch of soft vegetation. John waved his wand, and the parchments floating around him rapidly gathered together into a single book.
He quickly stepped forward and used magic to examine her condition.
Inside Daphne's body, the cursed power began growing rapidly, like mushrooms bursting forth after rainfall, swiftly spreading throughout her entire body.
And within an extremely short time, Daphne entered a state on the verge of death.
"The eruption is far beyond expectations," John's heart tightened as he hurriedly began the treatment.
